Reports indicate Russia is rebuilding the famous Soviet-era 1st Guard’s Red Banner Tank Army.
This Tank Army was formed in 1942 in the Eastern Front during WW2 and it played a major role in many battles including Stalingrad, Kurdk and the final battle for Berlin. It served in Eastern Germany until 1992 and was disbanded after its withdrawal from Germany in the same year.
The new resurrected 1st Guard’s Red Banner Tank Army will have its headquarters in Bakovka, near Moscow.
The core of the army will be formed around the 4th Guard’s Tank Division and the 2nd Guard’s Motor Rifle Division with units from other Tank and Rifle brigades.
The resurrected Tank Army will have improved T-14 main battle tanks as soon as the second quarter of 2016.
This is the first time since the end of the Cold War in which Russia developed a true offensive armoured Army.
